In 1934 by a resolution of the city council all the volunteer fire companies were disbanded and the fire department became fully paid. In 1938 the paid firefighters of Newburgh gained affiliation with the International Association of Fire Fighters becoming Local 589. The City of Newburgh Professional Firefighters IAFF local 589 consists of 62 uniform members of the fire department. This includes 6 Assistant Chiefs, 3 Captains, 16 Lieutenants, and 37 Firefighters. These members are highly trained and highly motivated toward the protection of the citizens of the City of Newburgh. With the department over 200 years old and the paid service over 70, the City of Newburgh Firefighters are some of the most aggressive and determined firefighters there are. No matter what they’ve faced in their history; whether it is cut backs, lack of funding, old and tired equipment, or simply the dilapidated buildings they enter, Newburgh Firefighters have always been there giving all they have so the fires go out and the lives are saved.

The members of IAFF Local 589 man 1 Truck and 2 Engine Companies at all times. These companies are staffed with a company officer and at least 2 firefighters (occasionally 3 firefighters) in addition to an Assistant Chief serving as the Tour commander (Car 4) to provide fully paid/ professional fire protection for the City of Newburgh, NY. Unlike in many other smaller fire departments, these companies are specially trained in their specific duties. In the event of a second alarm fire, members will be called back to man an additional engine and truck company to assist and relieve 1st alarm crews. Marine 1 a 26’ Stieger Craft Fire Boat is also manned when needed to provide protection to our vital riverfront. In addition to the fire suppression side of the department, the Fire Prevention division provides public education, fire investigation, and code enforcement.

Newburgh is a small, but densely populated city with a population of approximately 28,500 people. Newburgh is 3.9 square miles, located approximately 60 miles north of New York City on the west bank of the Hudson River. It was once considered the Queen City of the Hudson because of its location; its port is halfway between New York City and Albany. The City was once and industrial hub of the area as well as an area of entertainment with multiple theaters as well as other entertainment facilities. Today many of the entertainment and industry have left, however the city still contains many factories, commercial buildings as well as an active port. The City is also the home the Mount Saint Mary’s College as well as a local branch of SUNY Orange, a local community college.
