
The City of Newburgh Firefighters are saddened to hear of the passing of nine brother firefighters who gallantly lost their lives in the line of duty. It's the worst firefighter fatality since 9/11. A memorial service for the nine Charleston fire fighters will be held Friday, June 22, at 10:00 a.m. at the North Charleston Coliseum, 5001 Coliseum Drive, North Charleston, South Carolina 29418; (843) 529-5050. Each will also have individual funerals.
A 24-hour hotline has been established in conjunction with the S.C. Firefighters' Association to handle the enormous influx of calls from the public and fire departments nationwide wanting to attend or participate in Friday's Memorial Service. The toll free hotline number for the public and public service agencies is (866) 915-3010. The hotline is staffed by local fire fighters.
The memorial service is open to the public, and thousands are expected to attend, including representatives from fire departments throughout the country who want to send crews or honor guards to pay tribute to the nine fallen men. IAFF Honor Guard interested in participating in the memorial should contact Matt Thomson at (843) 367-3966.
To accommodate the massive influx of fire personnel, a staging area for fire apparatus will be set up Friday at Concord and Washington Streets. Line up will begin at 5:00 a.m., with a procession to the Coliseum beginning at 8:00 a.m. Additionally, a staging area will be set up at the Coliseum for honor guards and fire fighters in full uniform. Road closures and the parade route are being determined and will be announced at a later time.
