January 6th, 2008- A late model Honda Accord was traveling westbound on Washington St, as it approached S. Robinson Ave (9W) it proceeded through a steady red light at the same time a tractor trailer tanker was traveling south bound on S. Robinson. The two collided and the car became wedged underneath the tanker. The car was dragged approx 25ft past the intersection down S Robinson Ave. Engine 3 and Truck 1 were dispatched to a tractor trailer vs. car MVA at box 342 the intersection of Washington St and S Robinson Ave at 0202 hrs. Upon arrival companies found the demolished car under the tanker, almost completly through the other side with two victims still alive. Engine 3 Stretched a handline for protection while Truck 1 set up for extrication. Car 4 then called for Engine 1 to the scene to assist with extrication, A mutual aid engine and truck to cover the city and a 2nd Alarm assignment to be transmitted. This brought Truck 10 to the scene, Engine 10 to cover the city, and a special request for Winona Lake's Rescue to the scene. The victims were both extricated at 0235hrs and transported ALS to St. Luke's Hospital by Mobile Life Support. The reason for the surprisingly quick extrication was the fact that the tanker actually tore the roof and drivers side of the car off as it dragged it down S Robinson Ave. While operating another accident occured when a drunk driver traveling south on S. Robinson crashed into a Police Dept tow truck which was parked across the lane protecting the scene.Luckily the tow truck took the blow, had the car entered the scene it could have been the men operating. Most companies took up, but Engine 3 stayed at the scene with the protection line until the two vehicles were separated by wreckers. All companies were in service at 0527hrs. |
